Abstract
Developed societies have always been aware of the importance of data storing
unrelatedly the source - public life, scientific research or events recorded
through various statistics. The development of technology has brought new
methods that have facilitated and accelerated the process of archiving and
sharing data through the development of digital archives. In some countries,
digital archives appeared in the 21st century, while some societies have a
tradition longer than half a century. The subject of this chapter is digital
archives in social sciences and the possibility of measuring positive impacts on
science and society. Impact assessment of data archives in the social sciences
is a very challenging process. For that purpose, Charles Beagrie Ltd, London
with The Centre for Strategic Economic Studies, University Victoria, the US in
2012 developed the methodology on “Economic Impact Evaluation of the
Economic and Social Data Service” which is used in this chapter. This part
aims to present benefits of digital archives, both direct and indirect, private and
public, near-term and long-term based on a case study “RRPP Data Collection
in Serbia”, implemented by the Institute of Economic Sciences, Belgrade.
