Abstract
In contemporary society, electronic sources are an example of new and
changing models of information delivery. The access to the digitised
information through electronic sources, such as e-journals, consortiums, online
databases and other similar resources facilitates the preservation, access, and
sharing of an original document to the researchers worldwide. Therefore, a
number of measures are being taken in the field all over the world to conserve
and preserve the knowledge of the past and present it to future generations.
Digital archives and collections provide greater opportunities for researchers to
inspect and use important historical materials with increased convenience.
Digital content can be browsed easily and searched, indexed or collated
instantly. Most importantly, it can be linked to ‘web’ of other content, either
locally or globally via the internet. However, within the field of information
science, little attention has been paid to the issue of how much impact the
projects of digitising archival collections has had on actual historical research
publications. Digitisation is a complex process, and there are concrete benefits
to be realised from various types of digitisation projects. These can be
summarised into following categories: access, support of preservation
activities, development of collections, institutional and strategic benefits, and
research and education. Little has been done, especially in Serbia, to determine
the direct relationship between digital resources and scientific research.
Through the research of contemporary practice, this paper seeks to explain the
importance of forming digital archives and collections for future economic
research in Serbia.
